Astroglide® is a personal lubricant marketed towards men and women who would like to increase their sexual responsiveness during intercourse and other forms of stimulation. The company says the original liquid-based formula has been “developed to mimic natural body fluids.” According to advertisements, the formula may act as both a lubricant and a moisturizer. Some men may just be looking for a lubricant to enhance the sexual experience, but others may prefer something more; some supplements are advertised as capable of boosting sex drive, stamina and even supporting firmer and longer-lasting erections. We will examine this company’s products to see if they may offer anything beyond personal lubrication.

The company’s official Website indicates that the original “Liquid” formula may consist of some of the following ingredients: Purified Water, Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, Polyquaternium 15, Methyl Paraben and Propyl Paraben. This formula is advertised as being “pH balanced, water-based, water-soluble and petroleum free.” It is also marketed as an ideal “moisturizer for vaginal dryness.” Unfortunately, this version of the lubricant appears to contain not only one type of Paraben, but two. Methyl and Propyl Paraben are said to function as primarily as preservatives and may be found across the industry in topical solutions. Many cosmetic products, including makeup, may contain Parabens. We note, however, that some research indicates these may have carcinogenic properties.

The company also appears to manufacture a “Glycerin and Paraben Free” version, which may contain Water, Butylene Glycol, Xylitol, Propylene Glycol and Polyquaternium 15. It is marketed towards those worried about “irritation and burning caused by Glycerin and Parabens.” This leads us to wonder why the company even continues to market the original formula with Parabens. Other products in the company’s lineup may include the Gel, which may contain both Glycerin and Parabens; Warming Liquid, which is advertised towards men and women interested in experiencing “a soft, warming sensation” from their personal lubricants; 2 in 1 Warming Massage Lotion and Personal Lubricant; Sensual Strawberry lubricant; and Silken Secret for women.

Again, we bring up the fact that the majority of the company’s products may contain Parabens, which may act as irritants and may have long-term risks of developing certain types of cancers. We find it odd that the company would go out of its way to market a single Paraben-free formula; why not just get rid of these potential carcinogens from all of their products? We are disappointed to report that most of these topical solutions may not be intended exclusively for male sexual enhancement; that is, they may not boost stamina and sex drive, or promote blood flow to the genital area. Enhanced blood flow is said to promote a stronger, firmer and longer-lasting erection. The herb-based sexual stimulant, Yohimbe, is said to be ideal for this effect.
