Penile Injection Therapy

Penile Injection Therapy is also known as intracavernosal injection therapy in more clinical settings; and it is one of the alternatives offered to the 30-40% of men who commonly fail to have healthier erections while using pharmaceutical drugs, such as with Viagra®, prescribed by their health care provider.

Most of us are used to taking a pill, whether pharmaceutical or herbal, to augment sexual function. However, as its name suggests, with Penile Injection Therapy, an injection-based technology is used, in which vasoactive medicine is used to increase the blood flow in the penis. There are quite a few different types of drugs which fall into this category, but those most commonly used are Papaverine, Phentolamine and Prostaglandin E1. It is said the individual injects a tiny amount of the vasoactive medicine into the side of his penis, in order to create an erection. After the injection, an erection typically begins within 15 minutes, and they often last several hours. Penile Injection Therapy is a rather old form of treatment for Erectile Dysfunction, which has been available since the mid-eighties. However, it lost its popularity due to the development of newer medications that did not require an injection.
