Phalloplasty

Phalloplasty is a term most often used to refer to the re-construction of a penis, but it may also be used to describe the artificial modification of the penis by surgery, frequently performed for cosmetic purposes. It may also be used to refer to a procedure used to try to enlarge the penis; although the success rate is reportedly extremely low. Oddly, Phalloplasty was not originally intended to be used on men. The first Phalloplasty was actually performed as part of a sexual reassignment surgery, in 1946, in which a woman was transformed into a man.

While this surgery has been associated with penis enlargement, it is most often performed on men who have lost their penis due to an accident or illness, or transmen, which are, female-to-male transgendered or transsexual people. Each of these classes of individuals requires a complete reconstruction of a penis, but regardless of the reason behind the surgery, the basic procedures are the same. The only exception to this rule is if an individual is suffering from an extreme form of micro/macropenis. This surgery is a bit easier for them, because the urethra still ends in the front of the genital area. In fact, it is said the lengthening of the urethra is often the most complex part of this surgery.

With men who have lost their penis, or with transmen, an erectile prosthesis is inserted into the newly reconstructed penis as a substitute for erectile tissue and to enable sexual penetration. However, this part of the procedure is usually done in separate surgeries, because of an intense healing process. Also, there are a variety of erectile prostheses used during this process, including hinged rods that allow the neo-penis to stand up or hang down, but there are also elaborate pumping systems used as well.

Some men believe that this kind of surgery may enable them to increase their penis size, but while it is used in some cases of extreme micro penis, for most men, it is not a viable option. In fact, the American Urological Association says procedures that actually involve cutting of the suspensory ligament of the penis, which is what happens most often in penis enlargement surgery, has “not been shown to be safe or effective.”

Clearly, men who have lost their penis in an accident or due to illness many find Phalloplasty to be a viable option. Also, FTM transsexuals may find it to be a procedure they choose to explore. However, men who would like to increase the size of their penis may wish to take into account that the Urological Association indicates that procedures that actually involve cutting of the suspensory ligament of the penis have “not been shown to be safe or effective.” This means that in some cases, it may create a worse problem in the long run.
