Retrograde Ejaculation

Retrograde Ejaculation occurs in men when the ejaculatory fluid, which normally transits the body through the urethra, is redirected towards the urinary bladder. It is usually diagnosed through a urinalysis performed on a urine specimen, which is acquired right after ejaculation, to see if it contains an unusually high level of sperm. This is important, because Anejaculation may be confused with Retrograde Ejaculation, since they have some aspects in common, but urinalysis may distinguish between them.

It is said Retrograde Ejaculation occurs for a variety of reasons, including issues with the autonomic nervous system or the prostate. However, Retrograde Ejaculation is known to be a fairly common complication of a trans-urethral resection of the prostate. During this medical procedure, diseased or non-diseased enlarged prostate tissue is excised through a resectoscope, placed in the urethra. Retrograde Ejaculation may also be a complication of diabetes, particularly in men who exhibit poor long-term blood sugar control, which causes neuropathy of the bladder sphincter.

Retrograde Ejaculation may also be a side effect of medications, such as Tamsulosin, which are used to loosen muscles along the urinary tract. These kinds of medications may cause the bladder sphincter to relax, but it may also impede its ability to contract fully. Yet in the end, it is said to be antidepressants and antipsychotic medications that cause this condition more than any other medications. Many individuals discontinue using them when this issue arises.

There are many ways to address Retrograde Ejaculation, including the use of a drug known as Pseudoephedrine, or Sudafed. Also, the tricyclic antidepressant, Imipramine, has been shown to ease Retrograde Ejaculation in some men. Interestingly, both of these medications are believed to have links to erectile dysfunction. In fact, Pseudoephedrine is often used as a frontline defense for priapism.

For the most part, men who have Retrograde Ejaculation have full and normal sex lives. However, it is important to note that a significant number of men have reported reduced sensation during orgasm.
