Shilajit

Shilajit is also sometimes called Shilajeet, and it is actually pale-brown to blackish gummy brown secretion of the Styrax officinalis Linn, which is indigenous to India, Himalayas, and Afghanistan. Unlike many other herbal extracts and plants Shilajit is most often found on steep rocks in the mountains. Shilajit is full of many healthful elements including minerals, benzopyrones, and fulvic acids. One of the most interesting aspects of this element is that it is not only influence by the plant it is secreted by, but it is also influenced by environmental nature of the rock, local temperature, humidity and altitude.

In folk medicine, shilajit has been used to treat diverse clinical conditions ranging from peptic ulcer to bone healing, along with potentially having aphrodisiac properties. There's been very little formal research conducted on Shilajit, however, one study showed that it may have some affect on the cholinergic system. This is a system of nerve cells, which use acetylcholine as its neurotransmitter. Interestingly, nerve cells in the cholinergic system have been found to be damaged in the brains of Alzheimer patients. Initial studies have shown that it may enhance memory, as well as having anti-inflammatory properties.

In India, Shilajit is sometimes used as an aphrodisiac; although that is not the ability it is best known for, nor has its ability to augment sexuality been proven to be viable. It has more traditionally been used to strengthen the whole body, and to ease the signs of aging. It is found in countless anti-aging formulas, due to its purported ability to stabilize blood sugar levels, wound healing and revitalize the urinary tract, as well as improve brain and kidney functioning. It has also been used directly to try to ease arthritis, hypertension and obesity, as well as numerous other conditions.

This element has so many possibilities associated with it that we are not surprised that some developers have focused on its purported aphrodisiac abilities. However, our finding show that its abilities in this area are not as affective as other more well known and proven aphrodisiacs such as Damiana, an aphrodisiac from Central and South American.

Damiana has actually been shown to be extremely potent, and has been used extensively in Europe to augment sexual potency, desire and stamina. It actually has a natural ability to increase the sensitivity of nerves in the penis, which in turn can increase testosterone production, thereby boosting sex drive and desire. Also, it has been shown to bump up blood flow to the genital area, which in turn can make the erections firmer and longer lasting.

In general, we believe that Shilajit may be proven to be an extremely healthful herbal extract that may be able to help users in a variety of areas. However, we saw little indication that it has a powerful ability to increase sexuality; although users may feel healthier and more energetic. There are some elements on the market that can affect sexuality directly, such as Damiana, which has been shown to increase sexual desire, as well as increase the hardness, longevity and frequency of erections. It is particularly effective when used in a fast acting formula, with other known sexually enhancers, such as Yohimbe.
